Brief: How can a fashion-based exhibition or cultural experience at LCF East Bank engage young people in Newham?
When I received this brief, I knew I wanted it to link back to the subcultures present in Newham. I've always felt a strong connection to subcultures and the way they silently shape communities, lives, and perspectives. As a Newham resident, I've experienced the vibrant culture of skating in Stratford, and its deep-rooted history and cultural relevance in the community made it the perfect way to respond to my brief.
Skate East is an immersive cultural experience spanning a weekend of interactive and fun workshops and exhibitions that expose the public to the cultural relevance of skating in Stratford.
This exhibition aims to invite and immerse the Newham audience in the world of fashion and community through skating. Stratford boasts a profound legacy as the nurturing ground for a vibrant skating community, dating back to the 1980s and regaining its popularity during the pandemic.
Through workshops with Watch my Wheels; a collective that emphasises community for individuals from diverse backgrounds through skating, a photo exhibition of Roland Ramanan's work, a storefront of skating and fashion and loads of drinks, food and socialising,
Skate East position itself as a weekend activity that aims to educate and promote openess.
